Owyhee Backcountry Byway - Road Trip!

Last spring I watched a segment on Outdoor Idaho about a really great day trip called the Owyhee Backcountry Byway.  I decided after seeing the show, that was a trip I wanted to take.  I had originally talked to Linda about grabbing Nancy and heading out, but since Chawley and Lola (I've decided I'm going to call her Lola, cause that's CLOSE to Lala, her nickname and I love that show) left Idaho, then it was on to Plan B.

So, Tuesday Nancy and I are heading out on this day-long road trip into the Owyhees.  We drive to Jordan Valley, Or where we take off on a dirt road for about 100 miles before hitting the highway back in Grandview, Idaho.

Nancy's picking me up by 6am and we'll head out hoping to hit Jordan Valley about daylight and catch some antelope.

I'm excited to take my new camera (have I mentioned how much I love that thing!).  We're taking blankets, plenty of food and water.

Here are some pictures of the area...

I'm really looking forward to this trip.  I'm sure it will give me a better understanding of dad's love for the Owyhees and I love the high desert.  If we're not home by 10pm, you know where to send the Calvary!

Are you planning to get to Bull Camp?

No Casey, I don't think that's close to where we'll be. I want to see the Owyhees the way dad did, not where he died. Someday I'll go there but not this time.

I would stop at the ranch that will be on your right (south side) about 5 miles after crossing at North Fork. A really neat couple there that we used to get raspberries from. Unless its wet that road is a good one, I use to patrol it in my ISP car from April/May thru November/December. If its wet though its a bear, wouldn't recommend it. Gorgeous drive with the small aspen stands turning in the fall. Enjoy and share some pictures with displaced Idahoans like me!

Oh...and Bull Camp can't really be accessed from that side....Duck Valley Indian Res off 51 is easiest...look up dad when you are ready for that Jodi as I've been in there with him before. Enjoy your drive...

You girls are brave--100 miles of dirt road. But it will be interesting, some beautiful, some stark. Hope the weather is good to you----be careful and enjoy.

Mom, I just hope it doesn't rain and we get stuck! At least you all know where to look for us. I understand there's also no cell phone coverage out there. I'm excited!

You've never been?? It's a great road trip! If the weather is good, drop into Leslie Gulch (don't go if it is raining). Oh, heck - don't try to drive north out of Succor Creek if it has been raining. We got stuck in 12" of muck on our way into Succor Creek from Ontario once (in a Ford Escort - and, no, we didn't need to be towed out. We drove out - long story). We have spent many a wonderful night camping out in Leslie Gulch and exploring Succor Creek.
