As you may remember, several years ago my sisters and I decided (to my mother's horror) to get our noses pierced. I loved it and believe it or not, so did my mom. However, after ripping if out of my nose for the second time, I finally decided it just wasn't meant to be.
I saw a saying on the Internet the other day that I really liked. It was "I fight like a girl". Well, I'm hoping my fight is over and decided I wanted a t-shirt that said "I fought like a girl..." and had my sister Linda do something on her computer. I love it! But, before I had even gotten back what I asked her to do, I wondered to myself, "wouldn't this be an awesome tattoo?" I love the raggedness of the ribbon (symbolizing the harshness of breast cancer), and the single pink (signifying grace and elegance - ok, that's SO not me!) long-stemmed rose (signifying “I will remember you always”).
Something small, Linda thinks on my wrist. Maybe I need to travel down to Kat from the show LA Ink! Am I brave enough to do it? I don't know yet. Anyone want to join me? Sheri, what's the color of ribbon for your kind of cancer? We could change it and you could do one too! Why is it that I feel the need to have someone else join me in the pain I might experience?
What do you think? I want your honest opinion. Tattoo or no tattoo?
I don't think my cancer has a color! I love Linda's design tho and think it would be an awesome tat.
ReplyDeleteWell Sheri, let's make up a color! I think aqua would be nice!
ReplyDeleteYES!! I think you absolutely should! I love the "I fought like a girl" saying.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because for the first time in my life, I've been thinking about getting a tattoo. Just a small bird somewhere.
Are we having ANOTHER mid-life crisis?? ha! Our poor mother.
Kate, will you come down and we could sneak off together? Maybe when you send David and Anna off to Glacier to be eaten by a bear!
ReplyDeletehmmm... I say tat! But my vote would be to skip the rose... only because I hate roses (tattooed ones especially)
ReplyDeleteYou'd just be surprised at what "poor mother" thinks. ! I love the idea ! And the design is beautiful. After some of the tat has been done you might INSIST he/she omit the rose.
ReplyDeleteLinda, beautiful job on the design!
Holy crap! Mom, someone's using your identity and has posted a comment on my blog!
ReplyDeleteSo, you think it would look better without the rose too?
mom... you said it yourself, roses are not your thing. DO NOT get somthing tattooed on your body that is not 'your thing'!
ReplyDeleteI totally think you should do it. And somewhere where it can be seen easily, like your wrist, is good. I wouldn't normally condone a tattoo, but this one is different. It's tough and delicate at the same time. Just like you. That whole piece of artwork IS you. I totally say go for it. And the rose is what makes it delicate. But if not a rose, would you like to see it with a different flower? I think it needs that little touch of 'dainty'in it, because, whether you like it or not, you have a touch of 'dainty' about you.
ReplyDeleteMe? Dainty? You've got to be shitting me! What other kind of flower do you think would look good? Maybe a straight stem would look better? My favorite flower is a lilac (reminds me of grama Cornwall when she brought them to me when I had Jake and I've loved them since), but I don't know how that would look! I've decided I'd also like to add 3 small teardrops coming off of it to honor dad, Conley, and Don Beach. I've thought about 3 small teardrops for years but didn't want people to think I'd killed three people...
ReplyDeleteNope, its really me with this opinion.
ReplyDeleteHow about three single lilac blossoms (not the whole stem full) . I thought of a tear from each one, but that would create a feeling of sadness to the flowers that bring you joy. The tears would have to be somewhere else on the tat.
And yes, Jodi, you do have a daintiness , gentleness that IS you. We love you for it and you are also a very STRONG lady.
LOVE YOU !
dainty?! ;o}
ReplyDeleteYeah, Jacki, everbody thinks I have SOME dainty in me! Isn't that sweet!
ReplyDeleteWhen I read "to tat or not to tat", I mistakenly I thought you were talking about making lace. Joke is on this old lady, who decided long ago that tatting was not for me. Either kind. But then I have not gone through what you ladies are "tatting" about.
ReplyDeleteWow Jodi, I love the sketch. I also love the teardrop idea. Maybe coming from some kind of flower that you choose if you decide not to do a rose. It will be a great tattoo.
ReplyDeleteIf you come to LA, I will pick you up at the airport and take you!! I love the idea. I haven't found a tattoo that speaks to me but if you feel it in your heart, I say go for it.
ReplyDeleteOk, now that Jacki said it first, I too thought that the rose didn't seem right. Roses are such a cliche, especially tattooed roses.
ReplyDeleteAnd really? Three tears?? What about something that memorialized them as they were ALIVE instead of dead? Like...I dunno...how about three little stars? I always remember dad singing that song "I was born under a wandering star..."
Shiiiit...aren't you sorry you asked??? The good news is, we're ALL in agreement that you SHOULD get a tattoo. :)
I'm like Orinda, but I say you should get the tat. (I really did think you were blogging about making lace, lol!). The rose doesn't bother me (I like roses), but I love lilacs, too. I can't see stars in the design of this tattoo (great job, Linda!), but maybe three lilac blossoms (not the whole cluster).
ReplyDeleteYou think on your wrist? Not your ankle?
Just take some advil before you have the tattoo done & you'll be fine (two of my kids have tattoos).
GO FOR IT!!
I agree w/Kate, the tears are sadness. The three lilac blossoms could represent the guys and the joy they brought to us and those who knew them.
ReplyDeleteYOU would know what it means.
I think if you're feeling it, you should go for it. I don't know about on your wrist, though--the back of it, or the underside? I think it'd hurt like a mother on the underside and I'd be all wiggy about the veins right there. And the back of the wrist might look weird. What about over your heart?
ReplyDeletelike aqua! I don't think your tat needs a flower at all....I like just the ribbon with the words. As far as the three tears go....tatoo them somewhere else all together. Bet you are sorry you asked!!
ReplyDeleteHow about a fawn with your ribbon.
ReplyDeleteOkay Aunt Jodi, I'm stepping in here. I've been to a total of 5 tattoo artists and there is a huge difference in quality and the healing process. The best I've been to is Steve's artist. I LOVE him and am trying to get back again in September. The place is cleaner than St. Luke's and he is a great artist with some maturity (I'd peg him at almost 50). So... talk with Steve about it. Really, MAV is great. -Kel
ReplyDeleteThanks Kel, that's the biggest thing that I worried about is who to use if I do it. Hopefully this guy isn't in Portland?
