The Old Brown Couch...

Kate is getting such good response about her house question, I decided I need to see what you think about MY problem.

I have this MATCHING, MIND YOU, old brown couch and chair from the 50s on my front porch. They're SO comfortable! I love them but Elmer Fudd thinks they need to go. He says they scream Hillbilly - and that's a problem?

This is what the couch and chair look like from the street...

And from the sidewalk...

And from the front porch...

The execution date is near! Our annual Hidden Springs yard sale is June 14 and 15. Elmer says they need to be off the porch and in the yard sale. I could never find typical porch/lawn furniture this comfortable. Do you think they look "tacky"? Should I let them go and find something new for the front porch? Sheri, I know you'll be honest!

  1. ok... I'll be honest too, mom... yes, you guys are hillbilies but I dont see any hilly billy in the couch & chair... now, on the other hand, cooking skulls in your driveway is a bit hillbilly-ish. The farm that you have in your (vizable) backyard is probably more hillbilly-ish than the chairs. I vote, stay on the furniture. Although, you will probably not find me sitting on them often because Im sure who ever owned them to begin with are now dead people. Gross!

  3. I like the set and they are very comfortable. I don't know why Elmer thinks they are so bad. I know, lets reupholster Elmer.

  5. I've got to be honest....I don't think upholstered furniture belongs outside. Sorry! I don't mind the way it looks tho and actually like the style....but what if bugs get in there?? Or they get damp and moldy from moist air? I like the idea of reupholstering Elmer too tho.Sheri

  7. I'm with Jacki: chickens and pheasants and god-know-what-else living in the back yard: THAT'S HILLBILLY. Cool, tasteful retro furniture on your porch is NOT. If it was brown and avocado-green floral with springs popping out of it, yeah, that would be hill billy. And remember, the whole point of the porches in Hidden Springs is to get people to sit out there and be neighborly. So having furnitre on your porch is perfectly logical.

I COVET that furniture, and if I had a place to put it I'd drive down there tomorrow and take if from you. Hey!! It would look AWESOME on our new front porch!!!

    So Elmer, YOU'RE OUTNUMBERED.

PS. Go vote on the LATEST photo on my blog.

  8. Oh man, there's a house I drive by every day on my way to work that really DOES have the hillbilly-furniture-on-the-porch thing going on: they have at least 3 rocking chairs, all in different states of disrepair, there is a hideous floral love-seat and a they even have a REFRIDGERATOR on the front porch!! The whole house looks like it could fall down at any minute. I wanted to take a picture yesterday to show Elmer what a REAL hillbilly house looks like, but I didn't want to get caught (or make them feel bad if they saw me).

  11. I think Sheri brought up a good point -- the upholstered furniture trying to survive the elements. When Jake and I took those pieces for a few months we had to seriously vacuum out bugs and dirt. The furniture worked great for us, but they probably won't last much longer outside. Besides, if you get rid of your stuff that just means you can look at buying someone else's at the garage sale.

  12. Jodi, I love it. It is NOT hillbilly. It's hip retro. You tell Elmer that it's staying. Don't get rid of it Jodi, you'll be sorry you did. Leave it, elements and all, and when it falls appart, THEN replace. Enjoy it while you can!
And tell Elmer I'ma gonna come o'er there an' open a can a' whoopass on him if he makes you sell it!
