  1. Wow, this is moving quickly! So, do you have to brush hog the hills around the house, or do they just grow naturally like a prairie? Your blog is making me dream of our country dream pad, had another one last night that was really vivid..and cool! Thank you Jodi

  2. After the fire a few years ago, Fish and Game volunteers came and planted bitterbrush and gave us seed which we planted. The seed was all native grasses. We want to keep it natural for the deer and other critters. We do have to follow some pretty strict fire restrictions here. Hence the metal roof and stucco instead of wood siding. We also can't have any trees within 75 ft of the house. Hopefully we won't have another fire through there, but if we do, the house should be safe.

Keep dreaming Kev, it will happen. Took us 25 years but here we are!

  4. Wow, that is very cool about native grasses around the land. How many acres again? So how would your grand total out of pocket costs when finished compare to buying the same exact house already built? A couple of friends say they will never build again, but I think we would love to build one day.

  5. Kev, we should have around $300,000 in it when it's all done - including the property. It's slightly over 14 acres. I would have been happy to have found 14 acres for that price with a house already on it but that's not do-able up here. We could have saved a ton of money by not doing the wraparound porch, but that just wasn't an option! I plan to be sitting on the east side with my tv out there this fall watching the BSU games!

  6. Wow, that's great. And seems really fast too. Seems like around here it takes contractors and stuff FOREVER to get anything done. Hurry Fall!

  7. I think most people dislike building (including me!) because while it sounds like fun to pick out fixtures, flooring, etc. it really isn't. It's frustrating and difficult! I know exactly what I want, but can't seem to find it - and I want it at a good price!

  8. Understand. We built a 3rd garage stall onto the house about 6 years ago and it damn near gave me an ulcer. But it turned out awesome and neighbors compliment the addition too, it was the looonnnng time it took that wasted me. Meg said she will NEVER build a house with me after that experience, but I can talk her into just about anything.
