Another Boise Icon is Lost...

We just found out a few days ago, that one of Ival and Joe's good friend's dad passed away.  They own one of Boise's icon drive-ins in town.  The other half of their restaurant is owned by another company and they will be taking over the building after this week.  That makes me incredibly sad.

I remember Mello's on Orchard, The Big Bun on Overland, and Red Steer.  It seems like the wonderful old drive-ins are slowing being lost.

I can't tell you right now which drive-in it is, but when Ival was talking to the owner this week, he mentioned they would be selling everything inside.  I knew I wanted at least part of that wonderful old place in our new home.  Jay told Ival we could have first dibs on buying anything from inside.  The last time I was in there they had an old milkshake machine sitting on the counter that had just broke down.   I want it.  They have some of their first menus on the walls and Ival said that was the only thing he wanted.  I'm thinking I might buy some of the old barstools.

He told Ival that upstairs, there's years worth of stuff.  So, tomorrow at 3, I'm meeting Jay to look things over and let him know what we want to buy.  I hope I find some wonderful things to put in our new house.  If I could afford it, I'd probably buy it all.  I'll let you know what I find and of course, I'll take pictures!  And as soon as they close, I'll tell you who it is.  I just don't want to make the announcement for them.

Oh, and did I mention that we're closing on Jacob Springs on Friday.  Finally!

  2. The items that you "pick" will definitely land in a great home! Nice

  3. When I moved to Boise I was facinated by all the old drive-ins. You just don't see them elsewhere any more. We made a game of going to one a week and trying them all out. I hope it is not one of my favorites!

  4. My dad used to work at Mello's when he was in high school in the 1960s. A huge treat at our house was always "Mellos Night" - and my dad would recreate the onion rings and fry sauce and burgers. ...something else I only seem to find in Boise are drive ins that serve fry sauce - I grew up on that stuff!
