Adam's 18th Birthday Request...

Adam has decided what he wants for his 18th birthday.  It's a rather strange request.

As I've mentioned, he's planning on joining the military right after he graduates.  The other day we were sitting on the couch and he said, "I want a tattoo for my birthday."

"Really?"

"Yep, I think I want one of grampa's prints tattooed on my arm so that when I go into the Army, I'll be able to look down and see it and I'll always know that he's with me."

Well, damned if that didn't just make my heart melt!  He's not sure which print he wants done, but he's thinking right now about the Mountain Man, which is the print we used to raise reward fund money when dad was killed.

I'm thinking this one might be less painful!  But, it will be up to Adam.

We're going to have to find someone REALLY good to do such an intricate piece.  Anyone know someone really good locally?  Any idea how much this might cost?  I thought I was going to get away with giving him 50 bucks...

  1. OWWWWWWWWWWW ! That is a lot of tattoo. But is the most beautiful thought. And Mountain Man is the most meaningful and doing it without the fence would be special. It would be Grampa with him, not a painting.

    A thoughtful plan.

  2. after studying the print----I guess the fence is necessary for the hands to have a reason to be as they are. What else could be there?

  3. Mom, I'm not sure it could be done without the fence. Besides, the fence is half the story of the picture.

Adam would actually have dad and Don Beach with him! I loved Don!

  4. I was thinking the Mountain Man would be cool, because then you could wrap the barbed wire fence all the way around Adam's arm {if he did the tat on his arm}.

  7. Chrystal probably knows someone. I can ask her for you. She went to a top-notch tattoo artist but he was all the way down in Eugene, OR. It isn't cheap - hundreds of dollars.

Tell Adam it has to be where he can cover it up. Levi had his on his shoulder (he designed his own).

I think this is a really cool idea. :)

  8. Good Morning. I printed off the images and showed them to a local tattoo artist who is really good. She said a portrait of this size would cost around $500. If you can't pay all at once, you can give them some of it, and they can do a little at a time. Keep in mind if you go this route, you are commiteed to getting it finished!

  10. If you can possibly get in to Darcy Nutt at Chalice, she's utterly the best portrait tattooist ever. She's internationally reknowned. Last I knew though, her wait list was a year long. Her husband is also excellent. Chalice is on Latah street kind of across from the synagogue.

  11. Wow Casey, I just looked at her work and she does great stuff. She also specializes in black and grey. I'll talk to Adam and see if we could get a consulation with her if he's REALLY committed.

I started thinking that maybe I'll give him some money for his birthday and if he really wants to spend it on a tattoo, then that's what he can do. We'll see how bad he wants it if he has to spend his own cash!

  15. I noticed you asked Jennifer Kau on Facebook about the tattoo. She is an amazing artist. She has done 2 of my tattoos and will do many more for me. She is very reasonable priced and a great artist.
