Why Spend the Money to go to Disneyland...

when you can get the ride of a lifetime in your very own backyard!

We got a lot more snow last night. It's beautiful. We have this AWESOME tubing hill about a mile east of Hidden Springs and with all this new snow, the boys wanted to try it out since it's the first year it's been here (it's a HUGE mountain of dirt that was piled off the road after construction.

So, all three boys, me, and two big sleds ('cause we couldn't get the back of the truck open - it was frozen shut) ended up in the front seat of my old red truck which is meant for three people at the most.

We got down to one of the few stop signs in the hood and slid to a stop even though it was in 4 wheel drive and I was going super slow. Damn, it was slick! Adam's cell phone rang and he reached into his coat pocket to get it when all of a sudden the engine revved as high as it could go and off we freakin' went! We started sliding and did a 360 as I had my foot SLAMMED on the break trying to get it to stop. But no. I yelled "The gas peddle is frozen!" and I jammed the brakes on even harder, but to no avail. We had slid around the corner and I knew that the only thing I could do was to go off the road and over the sidewalk, over the bank and into the marshy area that's designated a wildlife habitat for the birds up here. So, that's exactly what we did, at about 45 miles per hour. We were kicking up dirt that was about 6 inches under the snow because the tires were spinning so fast even though I had my foot jammed on the break. Finally, we spun around down by the marsh and I steered the truck as best I could toward the bank that went back up the hill. We finally stopped, engine still revving full tilt, because the truck couldn't go back up the hill. It all happened so fast, Adam was still talking on the phone to his friend giving him a blow-by-blow of what was happening.

I looked down at the gas peddle to try and unstick it and realized what the problem was "Damn it Adam, get your foot off the gas peddle!" Yep, when he went to answer his phone, his foot had slipped off the bump in the middle of the floor board and onto the gas peddle - and naturally, the more scared he got the harder his foot was pressed to the floor.

So what valuable lesson did I take away from this terrifying event?

I obviously only pee my pants when I laugh too hard - not when I'm scared to death.

  2. You must have wanted to beat Adam severely ! ! ! Good steering Jode to get thru that w/o winding up in someone's house or upside down. !
Well, I'm glad you found out that one good thing about yourself ! So you can just refrain from laughing too hard, and go ahead and be scared out of your wits with no fear of embarassment !

  5. Well, I didn't think so until Elmer got home and looked at it and discovered that some of the molding had come off the wheel well and he thinks I bent the tie rod - a mere $1,000 to fix? Why do men have to look at that stuff? I would have been perfectly happy to just know that I had gotten it out of the marsh the same way I went in cause we'd kicked up so much dirt that it was easy to get back out. But NO, he has to actually look at the vehicle and tell me what I screwed up.

  7. Yes. We do live in our own Disneyland....minus the Hillbillies killing all the birds in the habitat!
Where's this sledding hill? I must know so I can take the young'uns.

  8. Oh my GOB!!! How scary! You should have killed the engine, but then again, it's hard to think straight when you're terrified! Did you beat the snot outta Adam?

  9. Tallulah, go out Cartwright Rd like you're going toward Simplot's and Bogus Basin Rd. It's about a miles from HS on the right. There a green metal gate closing off the road to get to it so you have to park on the wide spot and walk to the hill. It's VERY steep and VERY long so with smaller kids, I'd suggest starting toward the bottom of the hill. It's quite the ride!

  10. Well, that was exciting! I couldn't even get out of my driveway for most of last week, let alone have a fun scary ride to tell about! (I think I would have peed my pants, tho)
